Spokane man jailed for alleged domestic violence

Most disputes between couples - married or unmarried - rarely become violent, but when they do, one or both parties can face criminal charges depending on the nature of the incident and the extent of the violence and any injuries. Unfortunately, Washington state, like other states, has enough incidents of domestic violence that law enforcement officers and prosecutors take them seriously and will not hesitate to arrest those they believe present a real danger.

Consider a 42-year-old Spokane man who was recently arrested for an alleged domestic violence incident in the Logan neighborhood of Spokane. According to a report from the Spokane Police Department, officers responded to a call about a man in possession of a gun outside a home near Montgomery Avenue around 9 p.m. The accused went back inside the house when officers arrived, according to their reports.

The authorities claim that an alleged female victim and another resident had been able to get out of the house and away from the suspect during their arrival. After 45 minutes of negotiation, the suspected abuser surrendered to authorities. After serving a warrant, police reportedly found a firearm and ammunition inside the residence. The suspect now faces charges of illegal possession of a firearm and city assault-domestic violence. He is in the Spokane County Jail pending arraignment. Court records indicate the man has one conviction for second-degree theft and was forbidden from possessing firearms.

Domestic violence charges are only slightly less serious than murder, rape or fraud charges, and they can jeopardize a person's reputation, employment and future. They can also mean lengthy prison terms and serious fines if someone is convicted. All Washington residents, however, have the right to present their side of any incident. A qualified attorney can help a defendant fight the charges and achieve the best possible outcome.
