Authorities arrest six people for distributing methamphetamine

Washington is one of many states that implements strict laws to prevent the use and distribution of drugs and other prohibited substances. In Spokane, Washington, residents should note that even a small quantity of a drug can land them in jail. Often, law enforcement officers conduct traffic stops for minor violations, perhaps in an effort to catch drivers who might be driving under the influence of drugs. Authorities also pursue drivers who are showing signs of intoxication. A subsequent search of an individual's vehicle may lead to him or her being charged with a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the type of drug and quantity allegedly involved.

Recently, six people were arrested on methamphetamine charges in Okanogan County, Washington. The arrests were allegedly the result of an eight-month investigation headed by the North Central Washington Narcotics Task Force and various other agencies, including the Douglas County Sherriff's Office, the Brewster Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, the United States Border Patrol, the Colville Tribal Police, and the Okanogan Sherriff's Office. Investigators claim they were able to purchase methamphetamines on numerous occasions near three different schools. The people who were arrested on drug charges, aged 21, 31, 33, 38 and 45-years-old, were incarcerated in a nearby jail.

Possession of drug paraphernalia is a misdemeanor charge, which means that it is easier for the defendant to negotiate with prosecutors for less severe penalties. However, offenses like drug distribution and drug trafficking are taken more seriously and are often prosecuted more aggressively. Therefore, and accused individual should present a strong criminal defense in order to protect his or her best interests. In some serious drug cases, the accused person enters a plea deal in hopes of getting some or all of the charges dropped. However, the defendant can fight the charges directly in an attempt to obtain an acquittal if the accused is confident that the defense is solid.

Here in Spokane, legal professionals who handle drug cases understand that each incident is unique and requires a different approach. A person brought up on drug charges may speak with a legal professional to explore all possible avenues for the best outcome.
